It will be so different to find myself working in a field I'm interested in- versus traveling to a classroom to have to pay to learn the skills to actually do it. I really like the fact that a communication degree is so versitle, and many areas could open up for me. I enjoy learning about specific areas in public relations and right now I need to focus on finishing school and obtaining an internship. That's a little hard to do when I work and don't make enough money and have to work long hours, just to come home to find three hours of homework to do. I need to make it through about three or four more terms, and I'm free. After I took some time off for about a year, I came back to Mercyhurst College anxious to take as many classes as I could and finish fast. I'm learning that wasn't such a good idea considering the fact I didn't do so hot last term. Unless classes are in my major, I really don't take them all that seriously. I hope to find a job that not only pays the bills, but something I enjoy doing. I don't want to end up an office junkee fixed on their coffee and stuck in their cubicle. So, I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will find something that suits my interests and personality.

Sickness and Assignments

I usually only get sick about once a year. This either includes the flu, a really bad cold, or even bronchitis. So far, I'm thinking it's just been a cold, but since I am a smoker- I think it could turn into bronchitis, considering my cough. So, in the midst of working a 13 hour day on Sunday afternoon from 11 a.m., until 12 a.m.- I felt myself getting sicker and sicker. After staying up until 4 a.m. studying for a midterm, I woke up to not being able to breathe at all through my nose and weezing in my chest. I barely made it to class to take my midterm after accidently taking Nightquill vs. Dayquill, so I was definately out of it during my test. If I was reading this about another person I would find some of this humerous, but when it's actually happening to you, it doesn't seem all that funny at all!
So, after missing school on Tuesday- it just seems I am so far behind. One day of class can seem like an eternity in the world of college. So I'm definately nervous to go to my Human Needs and Global Problems class tomorrow at 2:15 p.m.. I missed an in-class essay that was due this day, and my teacher never got back to me. I hope it's okay, because after returning to school after a year off of working and "good-times," I really need to boost my G.P.A., not lower it. In the midst of all of this I need to remember to take care of myself and not to let my nerves get the best of me when I am already under the weather! Also, CVS has a great aisle dedicated to the Human Cold and Flu. So, thank-you CVS for having such a great selection of medication!

Job Hunting

For the past week I have been doing more to enchance my income by searching for a new job. For the past five years I have been working in restaurants as a sever. By being a server, job abilities not only indlude waiting on tables and customers. They also include: side work- such as filling ice, stocking glasses, brewing coffee, decorating desserts, changing garbadge, and rolling silverware. This is just to mention a few. It is mainly the customers who pay us with tips, so they have to be your first priority, the other things happen while you wait on them.
The company usually pays a server $2.83/hr. and majority of money comes from tips. So, it really is a great part-time job while your in college, but currently I work at Boston's Gourtmet Pizza and Sport's Bar, and the money isn't really what I've been used to. So, I've applied at busier restuarants this week like Red Lobster, T.G.I. F.'s, and Longhorn Steakhouse. However, while looking on-line, I came across a classified in Erie that could be my first part-time job within my public relations field. It was for radio promotions, and it didn't say experience was crutial. So, I'm thinking I might write a letter and state my case with the experience I do have. Even it I just do it for fun, it would be cool to start a job with something I want to do in life, while actually taking the courses to further my knowledge in it...

One Hectic Day

Yesterday was a crazy day in the life of Matt. After getting a tooth pulled and taking a huge nap after being sedated, I decided to go car shopping. My friend Ken, who is a Car Salesman found me this awesome car that I still want. It's a 1999 black Grand Am Sedan, and after getting the price lowered to something reasonable, I signed a few papers and figured I would pick up my new car today. We all know that Car Salesmen are a little sneaky, but when your friends with one, you don't really think you'll get the short end of the stick. So, I let him run some numbers and everything seemed fine and dandy. Today, I get a call saying that I need a co-signer, which is no problem. However, come to find out my car payments went from being $150 to $235 because they said i can't finance a car for 60 months for a car that's older. So I definately got the complete run-a-round, and now I'm going to look for a car somewhere else. I figured that would cheer me up after my dental procedure, so when I felt better at night that's what I did. So, this weekend I will be looking for cars at other dealerships. Thank God I have another friend who is really good with numbers who is going with me. Hence, I'm a Public Relation major- haha, not a math major!

Christmas Break

Now that Christmas break is over, and the rush of the holidays are gone- it can seem a little depressing. Considering I worked over the entitre break, did all of my Christmas shopping Christmas Eve, and a lot of my friends that were home from break are all back home- I seem bored and it's like Christmas break didn't even happen at all!
Now is the time that I put into effect the things I wanted to do in my first journal entry about New Year's goals. I definately feel this all ties into why I want to go into Public Relations. I think that I am so used to being on the go all the time, that when I actually do get a break, I don't know what to do. I like the fact the Public Relations world seems a little edgy and hectic. For instance, when I was doing my biography on myself, it was more of a chore. I can be a really great writer substance wise, but maybe not so much on the grammer and spelling spectrum. I'm really not one to "toot" my own horn, and it's much easier for me to interview someone, or be a good story-teller. I guess I'm not used to having people grade my writing so in depth. I got A's and B's in college writing, and that's what really turned me onto Public Relations. So I need to remember to take constructive criticism a little bit better. I used to write for fun and I used to get really creative. Part of me feels that I've lost that, and how do you exactly get that back? Something else I think would be really fun as a career would be a journalist for the Rolling Stone Magazine, or an advice columnist. Well, just a few ideas to put out there... Is it Spring Break yet?

Happy New Year!

Welcome to my blog! My name is Matt, and I'm a 23 year old student. I attend Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. I am a Communication major with a concentration in Public Relations. With 2007 rapidly exiting and 2008 surfacing, I find myself questioning how this upcoming year can be different for me. Sometimes life comes at you fast, however it seems the past five years were lived in the fast lane, and I feel I should have more to show for it. So, with the New Year approaching, I would like to take this time and set some goals for myself. I would like to see myself more organized, healthy, and on top of my game in 2008. My organizational skills could use a "brush up," so-to-speak in the areas of school and my personal life, and knowing when to keep the two seperate. I also would like to quit smoking and hit the gym next year! I would also like to accomplish a lot more next year. Until then, I would like to make the best of the rest of the year... Cheers!
